GTA III sort le 22 octobre 2001 et marque un tournant pour la franchise Grand Theft Auto en introduisant un monde ouvert entièrement en 3D. Développé par DMA Design pour Rockstar Games et Take-Two Interactive, il combine action, conduite et tir dans une ville fictive inspirée de New York. Le jeu se joue en solo et propose une liberté d'exploration alors inédite pour le genre sandbox. Édité initialement sur PlayStation 2, il a ensuite été porté sur PC, Xbox, ainsi que sur Mac, iOS et Android.
